Winter Carnival in Steamboat Springs
Winter Carnival weekend in Steamboat Springs is a do not miss activity. If you didn’t get a chance to be there, mark your calendar to go next year. Nothing like it exists anywhere, and you really have to see it to believe it.
We had guests in town this week who marvelled at the events. It was the first time they saw Steamboat Spring’s Winter Carnival, and it lived up to the promised hype. (I’d have pictures, but my camera broke.)
They’re still talking about the horses galloping down Lincoln Avenue at full speed pulling 6 and 7 year olds. And how about the Winter Sports Club kids skiing down the face of Howelson in the dark with highway flares? Are ski jackets flame resistant?
Their jaws dropped when the five year olds launched over the 18K jump–one right after the other–only to be followed by the ski jumpers going through the ring of fire as flames dripped on the snow.
Pyromaniacs must be inspired by The Lighted Man with his backpack full of exploding fireworks. The Lighted Man trainees, who haven’t quite worked up to putting the fireworks in their backpack, pull sleds full of fireworks shooting around Howelson.
After all the flames and jumps and danger is a fireworks display that rivals Disney World’s shows.
One of our visitors said he is sure glad there’s a place left where the lawyers hadn’t taken away all the fun. I certainly agree!
