Ski Season is Over…What does Intrawest Have Planned for the Future?
Today was the last day of an epic snow season. Almost 500″of snow fell this season (okay, it was really 489″) and we’re supposed to get another foot by Tuesday.
Can someone just shut the snow off??? It’s been great, but Intrawest didn’t respond to the begging and pleading of locals and visitors to keep the mountain open, and now it’s time for spring. (Next year, the mountain closes on April 12th, or Easter Sunday.)
I’m sure Intrawest wants to get started on mountain improvements. They have a list of things to finish from last year and plenty more to start this year. Some of the plans/rumors going around are (and no, these are not all going to happen this year if they even happen at all):
- Replace Thunderhead with a six-pack to match the Christie Peak capacity. Right now, it can get bottlenecked at Thunderhead if the gondola is down.
- Install a roundabout at the intersection of Mt. Werner Blvd and Apres Ski Way.
- Create a pedestrian promenade with Burgess Creek flowing beside it to connect One Steamboat Place with Ski Time Square.
- Take the Thunderhead lift and use it to replace Elkhead.
- Widen Main Drag and Boulevard. They need to blast away a few boulders to make this a wider, gentler, green connector trail.
- Finish the re-grading of Headwall by smoothing out the “steps” created by the new Stampede and Rodeo trails.
- Possible gondola from Thunderhead to Storm Peak–more ski-in, ski-out development potential.
Today started out with warm temperatures and blue bird skies, but by noon it was–three guesses, first two don’t count–snowing. It was like a day in January instead of April 6th. The wind was howling and the snow was pelting us in the face. Everyone was underdressed. Brrr.
The snow conditions were amazing, though, and there were two apres ski concerts instead of one. The sun even peeked out for a minute or two just to tease us into believing spring is coming.
I, for one, am tired of white. It’s been a long winter. My daughter and I were walking along the Core Trail the other day and both of us stopped to ooh and aah over a single purple crocus.
It’s time to see the sun.
