Halloween in Steamboat a Wicked Good Time

Here’s a joke a mortgage lender told me:
The mother asks the son what he wants to be for Halloween. “I want to be real scary. I want to be Freddie”.
The mom replies, “Freddie Krueger? From ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’?”
“No”, the boy replies, “Freddie Mac, from ‘Nightmare on Wall Street’.’”
Steamboat Springs was full of real scary people last night at one of the best community events of the year–the Steamboat Halloween Stroll. (I forgot my camera, but Jay OHare from Altera Group–who takes way better pictures than I do–has incredible pictures at this link.) The entire town goes down to Lincoln Avenue and trick-or-treats from store to store. (Lincoln Avenue closes from 5th Street to 11th Street.)
Fuzziwigs gives out candy big enough to rot an entire family’s teeth, Epilogue Books hands out books of different reading levels to the kids, the Shack becomes a haunted house, the Steamboat firemen have the big truck out with the ladder extended, cider and hot chocolate is served on the street, and there is a pumpkin contest for the best carved pumpkin.
Entire families dress up–there are as many adults in costumes as kids–and they aren’t wearing the off-the-rack variety from Celebrations or WalMart. One family had masks from Italy and elaborate Masquerade Ball gowns the mom had hand-sewn. Two dachshund dogs wore buns–one had ketchup, the other had mustard.
Afterward, the adults come out to play. Restaurants and bars go into party mode with the adults heading up to the bar for their treats.
We went to the Steamboat Sailor’s last home game of the regular season. Our 8-1 home town team took a thumping from Glenwood Springs to end the regular season 8-2. Steamboat has some serious talent on the field, and they’ll be back next week to start the play-offs.
