Frontier Airlines started flying into the Yampa Valley Regional Airport yesterday increasing the number of airlines and seats into Steamboat Springs.   The flights will run during ski season from December 18 through April 21, 2009.

The flights were met with mixed enthusiasm when they were announced last fall.  Consumers were thrilled that there was another carrier in town.   Competition usually results in lower prices.  Ski Corp executives weren’t so delighted.  Steamboat has a unique air program that is carefully managed to keep the planes full of visitors who want to come to our out-of-the-way location.  Airlines are promised a certain amount of revenue for providing uninterrupted flights.   Adding more airline capacity affects those negotiations.
